Major Enhancements to AltaVista Canada

Published by: mike 2008-08-28

Marking its first anniversary, AltaVista Canada has introduced two major new specialty indexes for Canadian Internet users--Canadian News Index and Canadian Government Index.

Canadian Government Index contains over a million Web pages from both the federal and provincial government sites and provides users with a single comprehensive source for government related information.

Canadian News Index searches over 300 Canadian news sources daily and provides news updates on an hourly basis. It will give the Southam newspaper chain's canada.com site a run for its money--but having both resources available is good news for users.

AltaVista Canada maintains an index of over 17 million Canadian Web pages--up from 10 million pages on launch last year. The fully bilingual site provides users with access to a reported 50-90 percent more Canadian Web pages than any other search engine in the world.

Since AltaVista Canada was launched in January of 1998, over 1.5 million unique users have visited the site and traffic to the site has grown by over 300 percent during the past 12 months.

AltaVista Canada is the result of an agreement between TELUS Advertising Services and Compaq Computer Corp.'s AltaVista Search Service.

Edmonton-based TELUS Corp. is Canada's third largest telco, managing $4.0 billion in assets.
