A balustrade is a row of repeating balusters or small posts that support the top railing. You'll find them on porch railings, staircases, around decking, in commercial venues, and a host of other places.

It's all in how you say it depending on what part of the world you live in. The French say baluster, the Italian balaustro, the German balaustium. At the end of the day they are all the same. They are a molded shaft that is either round or square and made from wood, stone, stainless, or some other type of metal.

They are the support for the railing while at the same time making a dcor statement. There are many different styles and depending on your project you may want to be period specific.

The Assyrian palaces are the earliest findings of the baluster and the in the palace balconies of Venice they can be found dating back to the 15th century.

It is said that Giuliano da Sangallo is the inventor of these interesting pieces and they were first used on a Merdici villa terrace back in 1480. It is often an excellent method to identify the age of architecture and furniture from the past.

The style of balustrade you choose will give your deck or staircase safe and secure while providing an individual look and feel. Whether you are remodeling a character home or a modern home with contemporary styles you can have a wonderfully unique look.
