Microsoft shook up the computer security space when it announced and subsequently released OneCare Live. The low-cost, multi-PC subscription service not only keeps systems virus-free but also helps Windows users run a tighter ship overall.

Naturally, dedicated anti-malware outfits werent about to take things lying down.

McAfee has taken the wraps off Falcon, a security services platform that offers many of the expected protections, but with a twist. Two beta services, McAfee Total Protection Beta and McAfee VirusScan Plus Beta are being made available via Falcon ahead of its official launch this summer.

Total Protection is geared towards providing blanket protection over several facets of computing from anti-malware to general upkeep. VirusScan Plus, on the other hand, is focused on preventing malware, hackers and phishers from gaining a foothold on a Windows PC and a users personal information.

The company is offering its trademark anti-malware technologies that zap viruses, worms and spyware, of course. However, it goes even deeper to head off a new emerging threat - rootkits.

New X-Ray for Windows functionality digs deeper than most virus scans, detecting and killing rootkits according to the company. Rootkits have gained notoriety of late because they burrow deep into the OS, making them largely invisible to users and anti-virus apps alike.

Also offered are safe surfing features that alert users to suspicious web destinations that serve up malware and/or are involved in phishing scams. A new security center wraps all of the functions into a single, easy-to-manage console.

And theres even a cure for home networking pains. New network-aware features allow users to manage other machines on the network and establish secure printer and file sharing. Total Protection beta participants can optionally take the companys new online backup service for a spin.

The Falcon beta is available here (registration required).
